I have an idea in mind for a wrestling article... I began thinking of some of the best wrestlers to never win a state title and noticed a pattern with them... I probably won’t say what that pattern is until I write the article, but a lot of these guys seem to have something pretty big in common that could have made their paths to a state championship more difficult than the average person. Here are some of the guys who generally get brought up in this conversation:
Mario Galanakis Drew Foster My brother Brennan gets brought up. Corey Kalina from Belle Plaine Ben Knight from Sergeant Bluff-Luton Matt Kelly- Dubuque Hempstead Cole Erickson- Mepo Anthony Sherry- Glenwood Tolly Thompson Chris Helgeson- Lake Mills Joey Verschoor- Kingsley-Pierson Kyle Forness- Waterloo Columbus
What are some other ones?

This ought to be our first podcast topic when we do our first podcast. Galanakis at 5th-3rd-3rd-3rd belongs on the list for sure. Not only do you include his high school credentials but you have to include the fact that he took 3rd in the NJCAA for Ellsworth and that he was a two time NCAA DI Qualifier into account too. Memory alone won't do it, but if I search long enough I want to say he was ranked in the top twenty during his two seasons at Iowa. Kalina would love to know you included him on the list. He'd be an easy one to get on the Podcast too. Great guy. Known him a long time. Should've won the title as a senior. Jake Kerr of Oskaloosa belongs on the list. 6th-3rd-3rd-3rd for Oskaloosa. Jimmy Waters got him one year & I think a kid that later one wrestled for Northern Iowa got him another. Too early in the morning to think of his name, but he was an All American for the Panthers his junior season. Tolly might be #1 on this list. I mean come one, the dude won a national title in 1995 as a sophomore. Then he took 3rd in 96' & 97'. I want to say he won the Gorriaran Award his junior and senior years at Nebraska as well. Four time Big XII champ? I know he won three, not sure if he won it his freshman year or not. Being a homer, I gotta throw Mat McClenahan of Sigourney in there. Took 2nd twice. Then he took 3rd at the NCAA DIII Championships for NYU I'll think of more.

Being probably the best Hawkeye to never win an NCAA DI title. Finished 2nd three times in a row at the NCAA tournament.
